ITINs do not serve any purpose other than federal tax reporting. The IRS has a long list of documents or combinations of documents that can show your status and identity. A current passport would meet all these requirements and is the only document you can submit on its own. To obtain an ITIN, you must complete IRS Form W-7, IRS Application for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. The Form W-7 requires documentation substantiating foreign/alien status and true identity for each individual. You may either mail the documentation, along with the Form W-7, to the address shown in the Form W-7 Instructions, present it at IRS walk-in offices, or process your application through an Acceptance Agent authorized by the IRS.

But some non-citizens who have U.S. tax obligations aren’t eligible to receive a Social Security number. Instead, they can apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or ITIN, by submitting Form W-7 to the IRS. ITINs that have not been used on a tax return for Tax Year 2020, Tax Year 2021 or Tax Year 2022 will expire December 31, 2023. Unless you will not need to file an income tax return next year, you will likely need to renew your ITIN if you fit management accounting either of the above two categories.
