Story
Charles, a retiree, gets a new lease on life when he answers a private investigator’s ad and becomes a mole in a secret investigation into a nursing home. Michael Schur was inspired to write “A Man On the Inside” after watching the Chilean documentary “The Mole Agent.” He says, “The documentary The Mole Agent is very powerful because it evokes a remarkably similar feeling in people of all ages, ethnicities and genders, and I would describe that feeling very simply as: ‘I have to call my mother. ‘ In our show, we tried to do something similar with the tone: does our show really contribute to that feeling that makes us want to call our mothers? Ted Danson, about 76 years old, plays Charles, about 76 years old, a retired engineering professor living in San Francisco.
The dialogue is actually very clean and therefore more enjoyable
He is also the producer of this series, which stands out from most others because it avoids the all-too-common obscene dialogue. In the story, his wife may have died a year ago from the effects of Alzheimer’s. He is healthy, but perhaps bored with his daily life. He enjoys reading magazines and newspapers and often cuts out an interesting one to send to his married daughter who lives in Sacramento.
Charles will be the key
One day, through a hole cut out, he sees a small, short display. We are looking for a person between the ages of 75 and 85 for a specific job. This leads him to a private investigator hired by a man whose mother lives in some kind of luxury retirement home in San Francisco. Some valuable jewelry has been stolen and the son wants the thief caught.
My wife and I enjoyed streaming it
So he is hired to watch the place, observe and report, as the person who finds out what is going on. Ted Danson is simply perfect in this role, which he plays with a lot of humor. The question of who the thief was quickly turns less and less into a question of who the thieves were and more and more into a question of relationships. The characters are played by a great cast, many of whom are old favorites we’ve known for about 50 years.
One of the funniest episodes we’ve seen
After watching the first three episodes in one night, we binge-watched the last five episodes after our usual Saturday night dinner of steak and wine. The ending is a bit like a sequel, I hope they make it.
